The National Hispana
Leadership Institute (NHLI)15th Anniversary Celebration
at Walt Disney World in 0rlando was a memorable event.
Latinas from every corner of the nation came last
November to celebrate 15 years of accomplishments,
struggles, friendship and inspiration.
The
distinguished audience included Latinas from all walks
of life, Judges, educators, entrepreneurs, media professionals,
federal and corporate executives, doctors, attorneys
and community activists gathered to evaluate the progress
Latinas have made during the past fifteen years and
chart the future of the organization. Under the inspired
leadership of President Marisa Rivera-Albert and Board
Chair Linda Mazón Gutierrez, NHLI is experiencing
unprecedented growth and success. This was evident
by the quality of the presenters at the leadership
sessions, the number of participants (over 400) and
by the blue chip sponsors participating in the event.
Among the expert speakers were lsabel Valdés
of Valdés Solutions, who introduced the latest
data on Hispanic marketing from her recently published
book "Marketing to Latinos, Part ll." Valdés
said, "As the Hispanic market grows, it changes
and segments itself. New studies and new approaches
are key to understanding where the market will go."
Lilian Roybal-Rose's seminar on cross-cultural communications
and the behaviors that affect communications between
individuals drew a large and interactive audience.
Attendees were shown strategies to communicate effectively
with each other. Roybal-Rose, a nationally recognized
expert on cross-cultural issues, said, "The gap
between what we mean to say and what the other person
actually hears is a constant source of misunderstandings.

This is even more
evident when groups of different cultures try to communicate
with each other." LTC Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch
was at the top her of game during her workshop on
"Living our Legacy." Her powerful presentation
on celebrating our past and honoring our ancestors
while we move forward reminded many people of different
stages of their lives and of the people that were
part of their journey. The Mujer Awards Reception
& Gala took place at the American Adventures Pavilion.
It was a stunning event. Cristina Saralegui, star
of Univision's "The Cristina Show" and one
of the leading advocates for Hispanic immigrant women
in the country, was presented with the National Mujer
Award. Sonia Gutierrez. Executive Director of the
Carlos Rosario International Career Center in Washington,
D.C., was presented with the Regional Mujer Award.
It was a very special and emotional evening, concluding
with a spectacular fireworks display of the kind only
Disney can produce.
